Book of the Month
Each month we introduce you to a new book that we are reading with the children. We hope that it introduces you to new authors and stories that you can read to your children, especially at bedtime.
We use the same book in both the 2 year old room and the 3 and 4 year old room as we think it is important that children become familiar with key texts and develop their recall skills.
July - Ruby's Worry
This book is chosen as it helps children to understand the feeling of being worried and offers solutions. It encourages children to talk about their own feelings and emotions. This helps as some children might be beginning to feel a bit nervous about their move to school or even their move to the next room in Nursery.
June - Za Za's Baby Brother
As we start to look at how humans grow and change this book explores how babies change and also helps children think about how they feel about becoming a brother or a sister.
May - The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This half-term we learn about animals growing and their life cycles. We watch caterpillars change in to butterflies, so this book links closely with what the children will be learning about.
It is also another book that recaps the days of the week so that children become familiar with their sequence and builds on the knowledge from Oi Frog.
April - Oi Frog
This storybook promotes rhyming words and encourages word play.
March - Jasper's Beanstalk
Jasper's Beanstalk supports children's learning around gowning plants. It reinforces new vocabulary about planting and growing as well as days of the week.
February - Mr Wolf's Pancakes

Mr Wolf wants to make pancakes but is unable to read the recipe book, write the names of the ingredients or count the money to buy them. His neighbours are unwilling to help him, but are soon lured by the delicious smell of pancakes when he successfully completes his task. A humorous picture book which highlights the importance of literacy and in helping and sharing with others. Children will have experienced making their own lists. Menus and pancakes in our pancake café which parents are also invited to.

December - Jesus’ Christmas Party by Nicholas Allen
Jesus' Christmas Party is a simple retelling of the nativity story from the innkeepers point of view.
It has lovely pictures and is funny. It has repeated refrains in which children soon pick up on and enjoy joining in with.

November – Owl babies
Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Patrick Benson, is a classic children’s picture book. It is a timeless story that even very young children can relate to, with stunning and engaging illustrations.
Owl Babies offers a safe and secure opportunity to explore separation anxiety and the worries that children naturally experience. The story allows children to look at the situation of a parent going away through the eyes of Sarah, Percy and Bill and explore their own feelings. It also reinforces the idea that the situation will be resolved, if a parent goes away they will come back. If Mummy or Daddy leaves you at nursery they will come and pick you up.
October - Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler raises questions about what it means to be a friend, helping others, and teamwork. So this is a great story to promote these skills at the start of the school year. The book flows with the use of rhyming sentences. Rhyming teaches children how language works. It helps them notice and work with the sounds within words. When children are familiar with a nursery rhyme or rhyming book, they learn to anticipate the rhyming word. This prepares them to make predictions when they read, another important reading skill.
